Do You Live in One of the 25 Most Dangerous Cities in America?

Crime statistics are important to the FBI, and by rounding up data from local precincts from around the country on crimes ranging from murder to burglary, they are able to compile a report that reveals how law enforcement is dealing with crime year-over-year. Earlier this month, the FBI released their list of the top 25 most dangerous cities in America. The report revealed that overall crime in the United States is currently at a five year low, which is definitely a good thing, but obviously of no consolidation to anyone that has found themselves a victim.

In the list, the FBI defined violent crime as “murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.” And cities with the highest figures under this definition featured at the top of the list. So which city, I guess you are wondering, topped the list?

Well that unwanted award went to Flint, Michigan with 2,337 violent crimes per 100,000 people. The statistics also revealed that 83 forcible rapes were reported per 100,000. This is over three times the national average of 26.8 forcible rapes per 100,000 people.

Michigan also placed second on the list, this time with Detroit. 2,137 violent crimes per 100,000 people happened in Detroit in the last year, and 48.2 murders per 100,000. When you consider that the national average for murders per 100,000 people is 4.7, a figure of 48.2 is made all the more shocking.

Saint Louis, Missouri came in third place with 1,857 violent crimes per 100,000 people, and 58.7 forcible rapes per 100,000 people, once again, well above the national average.

Fourth on the list was Oakland, California with 1,683 violent crimes per 100,000 people, and 26.3 murders per 100,000 people over the last year, and making up the top five was Memphis, Tennessee with 1,584 violent crimes per 100,000 people and a total of 61 forcible rapes per 100,000 people.

The rest of the list of the most dangerous cities was as follows:
